Sentience Politics was founded in 2014. We advocate for a society that respects and protects all sentient beings. Our mission is to address the unnecessary suffering of animals, with a particular focus on political and legislative reforms that drive systemic changes in animal welfare. Through democratic tools like popular initiatives, we aim to shift societal perspectives on animal rights and encourage sustainable practices in agriculture.

Our vision is a world where non-human animals are free from suffering. To achieve this, we focus on reducing the consumption of animal products, improving animal welfare laws, and promoting alternative protein sources. Our initiatives, such as the factory farming ban and the Primate Initiative, strive to challenge the status quo and push for legislative changes that benefit both animals and the environment.

Initiative to abolish factory farming

Sentience launched the Initiative to abolish Factory Farming to bring attention to the conditions of animals in agriculture. This campaign resulted in a national referendum, with over 1 million people voting in favor of banning factory farming, marking a historic shift in public discourse. Although the initiative did not pass, the dialogue it sparked remains impactful, laying the foundation for future political movements.

Fundamental Rights for Primates

The “Fundamental Rights for Primates” initiative called for basic rights for non-human primates, such as the right to life and mental integrity, in Basel. Despite the initiative not passing, it generated over 300 media articles, and 25% of Basel voters supported the cause, making it a milestone in the fight for animal rights globally.

Sentience’s core team is composed of passionate advocates with expertise in law, agriculture, and ethical campaigning. Led by Philipp Ryf, and supported by a dedicated board and advisory council, the team has successfully navigated two historic referenda. With professionals like Dr. Priska Baur and Prof. Dr. Markus Wild on the advisory board, Sentience Politics continues to grow as a trusted voice in animal welfare advocacy.
